The whole DVD thing at the Mahaiwe is a BIG mess. After last week's fiasco they had Valley Communications there all week trying to "fix" things. They came to the conclusion that it was the fault of the projector. Sooo...... they shipped the old one out and got a new one, but not in time for tonight's movie. So they hired Sam to install one of his rental projectors. But Sam didn't have the correct lens for the presentation. So he'll be back at about 6:00 with the correct lens for a 7:00 show. The DVD played ok in the player when tested on the monitor in the booth.
I still don't know if I'm gonna stay there if they continue with DVD's. I do know that some of the shows must be on film cause they aren't available on DVD. Like the Bogart movie for Valentines day, it has to be shown on 35mm.

The DVD ran tonight, but not without some trouble. It broke up into a venetian blind like effect three times during the movie, and there was mismatch interference in the image during the bright scenes. ARGHHH!!!!!!! PLEASE let Dowmel go smoothly.
Next week at the least will also have to be DVD. Then hopefully after that we'll be back to film.

Tomorrow night (Monday) is the first (and hopefully last) DVD presentation. To prepare for it, I met Al at the Mahaiwe this morning at 10:00 to go over the procedure for the presentation in order to make it as "movie like" as possible. Well it didn't go well. The DVD didn't play on the projector, which uses a component input for signal. That's YUV, luminance and chroma. It's old and in B&W, so the only signal is on the luminance channel. Well the signal wasn't strong enough to hold the projector on sync, so it kept dropping out. No matter what we did, it dropped out. The composite output held ok on the monitor in the booth, but the quality is lesser. When I left we were going to abandon the movie and offer another DVD (42nd street) free of charge because he can work out the arrangements with WB (there's a lot of legal stuff that has to happen).
I went back about 30 minutes later, feeling guilty that I hadn't looked at EVERY option. I switched the component G input on the projector with the composite output of the DVD player and the signal held. The strength of the composite output was sufficient to hold the image. So I changed the monitor to the component G output so that I could cue everything and it worked.
It's an obscure movie and the weather isn't going to be that good so there may only be like 10 people there, but the point is It'll work, but with problems that we've overcome. And I'm not going to go through this crap for every movie. I did it for the first one because I needed to familiarize myself with everything. Al was going to cancel. I was there when he made the phone calls. I hope that he follows through on the commitment to stay with film, that he said to me at the end of this session today. He was really worried and actually repeated many of the things that I stated in my last e-mail to him about all this.
The bottom line is that we may be able to squeak by this one because of a rabbit I had in the hat. No-one would know the difference between film and DVD. It was a 1930 film that was digitally remastered. It'll only work this way cause it's B&W. We could have never gotten away with this had it been in color.
